OLD, New English Bible

Matthew chapter 12; V5-V8      Context

            Matthew chapter 12;V9-21Healing Story

NEWCOMB

V5) Have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple break the Sabbath and it is not held against them?  V6) I tell you, there is something greater than the temple here. V7) If you had known what that text means, ÒI require mercy, not sacrificeÓ, *you would not have condemned the innocent. V8) for the Son of Man is sovereign over the Sabbath.Õ

*(Refers to plucking heads of grain and eating out of hand on the Sabbath) Chapter 12:

Story V9-10)

     He went on to another place, and entered their synagogue.  A man was there with a withered arm. And they asked JesusÔ Is it permitted to heal on the Sabbath? (Ô They wanted to frame a charge against him.) V 11) But he said to them ÔSuppose you had one sheep, which fell into a ditch on the Sabbath; Is there one of you who would not catch hold of it and lift it out? V12) and surely

A man is worth far more than a sheep!)

It is therefore permitted to do good on the Sabbath.Õ  V13) Turning to the man he said, Stretch out your arm.Õ  He stretched it out, and it was made sound again like the other.

V14) But the Pharisees, on leaving the synagogue, laid a plot to do away with him. V15)

     Jesus was aware of it and withdrew.  Many followed, and he cured all who were ill; V16) and he gave strict injunctions that they were not to make him known. V17) This was to fulfil IsaiahÕs prophecy;

NOTE:

Jesus has asked not to tell of healing experiences a number of times.  This is one of them.  Also, add the story of the cleansed Leper who spread his story far and wide.

Much has been written about this and many questions posed of JESUS!

Here we post an answer he often gives for his actions and teachings. Read Verse 16-17 above.

JesusÕ Answer

MATT Ch. 12

V18-V21

ÔHere is my servant, whom I have chosen,

My beloved, on whom my favor rests;

I will put my Spirit upon him,

And he will not strive, he will not shout,

Nor will his voice be heard in the streets.

He will not snap off the broken reed,

Nor snuff out the smouldering wick,

Until he leads justice on to victory.

In him the nations shall place their hope.'
